Rose O’Neill

Rose O’Neill was an artist, writer, and big thinker who lived more than 100 years ago. She was the first woman in the United States to draw a comic strip and became super famous for creating the Kewpies—tiny, flying baby characters with big eyes and topknots on their heads. Rose believed that art could make the world a better place. She used her talent not just to make people smile, but also to help women fight for equal rights. At a time when women couldn’t even vote, Rose showed that even playful drawings could send a powerful message.

The Kewpies

The Kewpies started as cute little cartoons in a magazine in 1909, but they quickly became much more. These cheerful, chubby characters were funny and kind—and they were always trying to do good deeds in silly ways. People loved them so much that they soon appeared in ads, toys, books, and even on signs asking for women to get the right to vote! Because they looked so sweet and innocent, the Kewpies could sneak important messages into everyday life, like treating everyone fairly and helping those in need. In a time when girls and women didn’t always have a voice, the Kewpies helped speak up for them.
